South Wales-based Sigma 3 Kitchens is proudly celebrating 50 years in business—marking the milestone with a significant £20 million investment designed to scale operations and support long-term growth.
Founded in 1975 in Barry by then-teenage cabinet maker Brian Lakin, Sigma 3 began as a small, family-run workshop. From its humble beginnings, the company has evolved into a nationally recognised kitchen manufacturer with a strong retail and trade presence.
Today, Sigma 3 operates six kitchen and bedroom showrooms across South Wales and Surrey, located in Abergavenny, East Cardiff, West Cardiff, Llantrisant, Newport, Swansea, and Esher (just 10 miles from London Heathrow). In addition to its showrooms, Sigma 3 is also the force behind Masterclass Kitchens, a premium brand supplying independent kitchen retailers across the UK, and it supports trade professionals and developers through its specialist divisions.
A £20M Investment in the Future
A cornerstone of the anniversary celebrations is the company’s £20 million investment programme—an ambitious project that will triple its manufacturing capacity and expand its production space to 200,000 square feet. This development will significantly enhance Sigma 3’s ability to meet growing customer demand and stay at the forefront of kitchen design and innovation.
With over 230 employees and all manufacturing still proudly based in South Wales, the company says the investment reflects a strong commitment to its roots and a forward-thinking approach to growth.
“Reaching our 50-year milestone is a proud achievement for everyone at Sigma 3,” said Chairman and Founder Brian Lakin.
“Our journey has been defined by constant evolution, and it’s the dedication and talent of our people that have made it all possible. This investment lays the groundwork for the next phase—allowing us to continue delivering excellence and innovation for our customers.”
A Legacy Built on Growth and Craftsmanship
After starting as a cabinet maker in 1972, Brian Lakin founded Sigma 3 Kitchens in January 1975. The business moved into its first premises in Barry in 1976, followed by key showroom expansions in Swansea (1982) and Cardiff (1983). By 1987, surging demand led to the opening of a new factory in Llantrisant—still the heart of Sigma 3’s manufacturing operations today.
